The struggle for independence of Biafra, a West African region currently under Nigerian control, is far from over. Author: Dexter Cooke R viewer: Hajra Shannon The struggle for independence of Biafra, a West African region currently under Nigerian control, is far from over. While the region’s status as an independent state lasted only from 1967 to 1970, being reabsorbed into Nigeria at the conclusion of the Nigerian Civil War, Biafrans have never stopped yearning for the freedom of their homeland. In fact, the momentum of the Biafran independence movement is stronger than ever, with an ongoing referendum for self-determination that has gathered more than 50 million affirmative votes, according to Simon Njoku Ekpa, Prime Minister of Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), and the de-facto government in the Biafran homeland. The final results of the referendum will be announced at a convention organized by the BRGIE, which will be held in Lahti, Finland, from November 29 to Decem
Adeola Ajayi, the director-general of the State Security Service (SSS), has finally allowed lawyers access to Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, his special counsel, said on Monday. Mr Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The IPOB leader has been in detention since he was repatriated to Nigeria from Kenya in June 2021 under controversial circumstances. His legal team has repeatedly accused the SSS of denying them access to Mr Kanu. Meanwhile, the judge, Binta Nyako, on 20 May this year, had ordered the SSS to allow Mr Kanu to receive visitors for three days a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On 18 October week, PREMIUM TIMES reported that the court threatened to jail Mr Ajayi, the SSS director-general, if he continued to deny lawyers access to the IPOB leader in violation of the court order. In October, the court summoned the SSS director-general to “show cause” and defend himself over his a
The king faced chants of “murderers” as he visited hard-hit Paiporta, just outside of Valencia city, along with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and regional governor Carlos Mazon, where locals accuse authorities of a lax response to the disaster. After they posed for a photo, the crowd began hurling insults at the king, Mazon and Sanchez. The crowd surged forwards as security opened umbrellas to try and protect them from projectiles. Confronted by one resident, Felipe remained calm and lowered his umbrella to listen to him as police struggled to control those gathered. Queen Letizia also also spoke with furious residents and seemed visibly shaken, holding her head in her hands. The Royal Family’s social media channel released video in the aftermath of the protest, showing the king and queen embracing distraught residents. One man fell weeping into the king’s arms and in another shot, the King is seen hugging two crying women. The anger appeared largely directed at Sanchez and Mazon, who

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on Tuesday called for vengeance following what he described as attacks against supporters of his Pastef party by the opposition during the campaign for Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Sonko, who has been head of the government since it took office in April, spoke of clashes in the capital Dakar, the northern city of Saint-Louis and the central town of Koungheul. He blamed the attacks on supporters of Dakar mayor Barthelemy Dias, who heads a rival coalition. “Let every aggression suffered by Pastef on their part since the start of the campaign, let every patriot they have attacked and injured be proportionally avenged,” Sonko wrote in a Facebook post. “We will exercise our legitimate right to retaliate.” Sonko said that complaints had been filed but that there had been “zero arrests”. “Barthelemy Dias and his coalition should no longer campaign in this country,” he said. A meeting of Pastef party supporters is scheduled for later Tuesday near
